What’s next? Once the second phase is complete, UTA will be able to store, operate, maintain and service 256 buses. Our goal with this project is to maintain the historic integrity of the area, while providing UTA with the facility it needs to meet demand. From rocket reusability to global broadband networks to developing interplanetary transportation systems, our employees take pride in solving hard problems that. Despite its age, this unique 72,000 square foot historic building is substantially intact architecturally-we decided to adapt it into a new 80,000-square foot bus maintenance facility.Ī new 25,000-square foot, two-story facility will be added to house all administration and operations functions. Located in a historic site that was formerly the Denver and Rio Grande railroad yard, the historic “locomotive” building-built in 1923-is the oldest and largest railroad building of its kind in Utah. With a growing fleet and no ability to expand, this outdated facility needed to be replaced-we were tasked with designing a new building for UTA that will have the capacity to store, operate, maintain, and service 135 buses. While WMATA oversees MetroAccess services, the service itself is operated by multiple outside companies under contract to WMATA.Since 1972, Utah Transit Authority (UTA) has been operating and maintaining a fleet of 110 buses from its Central Bus Garage. MetroAccess is a shared ride service that operates through the District of Columbia and suburbs to serve individuals that are unable to use existing fixed route services due to disability. MetroBus currently has over 300 individual fixed routes that serve 12,216 individual bus stops. MetroBus began operation in 1967 and currently operates a fleet of 1,480 buses across over 1,500 square miles throughout the District of Columbia and surrounding suburbs. Most of the system operates a subway within the District of Columbia itself, and operates as an at grade or elevated line outside the District. Currently MetroRail operates as a 117 mile heavy rail transit system with 91 stations. MetroRail opened in 1976, and operates six heavy rail transit lines throughout the District of Columbia and surrounding suburbs. WMATA is a tri-jurisdictional government agency created by the US Congress through an interstate compact between the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland. Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) operates under the brands of MetroRail, MetroBus, and MetroAccess throughout the Washington DC Metropolitan area.
